Tutorial by Nancy

Nancy our DT gal wrote:

I’ve been using the Colette Collection a lot lately.... I LOVE it! It’s got amazing black and white prints with a shimmery metallic solid on the other side. They are so versatile and pretty. I wanted to jazz up the black and white color combo, so I got out my watercolor paints and started experimenting. Here’s how you can do the same!

1. It’s important that you use GCD Studios paper. I’m not saying this because I’m “supposed” to! :) It truly is the only patterned paper I know of that has enough flexibility and texture to not curl up when it’s damp. Plus, unlike most patterned paper, the ink on GCD Studios paper won’t run when it’s wet. So select your favorite black and white paper...I used this pretty lace one:

2. I use simple, cheap watercolor paints, from Prang. You could even borrow your kid’s Crayola paint set—they work great for this! Moisten your brush with water, and start spreading paint on the paper. I like to mix two colors for a cool blended look. Don’t worry if the paper "bubbles" a little... when you adhere it down, it will flatten out.
3. Cover as much of the paper as you want with paint.

4. Let the paper dry, then trim the painted section and adhere to cardstock. I made a little extra so I could put a punched circle on my envelope.

Wasn’t that easy? Think of all the ways you can alter your GCD Studios paper! Don’t forget the Paris Nights collection is black and white, too... perfect for customizing to match any color scheme!

Be Brave & Mix Different Pattern Papers

We are very lucky to have the beautiful and talented... Krista R on our DT. Over this past few months, I've noticed something cool about her cards and style. This girl loves Pattern Paper and she loves to mix different pattern papers together for projects.
You would think... "mixing pattern papers" would be a crazy mess, but Krista shows us it can be done beautifully.
Notice how she mixes a stripe with a floral? This is an easy way to create the look.

The true trick to this simple technique, is staying in the same color palette. As long as the patterns have the same colors, it will work. Here are 3 pattern papers that have a soft blue and bright yellow. Do you see how different the patterns are, but because the colors are the same, they end up working?

What ever your style might be, this is an easy look to create for "simple gals" or "paper piecing gals". It gives you a big "pow" to a layout/card and it doesn't cost a lot of $$$.

Create Texture With Stitching

A great way to add texture to a layout... is by stitching on it.

Nancy... did just that. With a simple stitch from her sewing machine, she added texture in her title block and framed out her layout.

Beatriz, also added stitching to her beautiful card and hand sewed on her buttons.

How often do you pull out a sewing machine for paper crafting?

"GO BOLD and SIMPLE" Contest

Good day scrappers!

Yesterday when I wrote "you have until Friday to post your projects" I didn't realize Friday... was the next day...lol TODAY! I'm a little off on my days this week, because Calvin (my little guy) is sick.

So, this means I'm extending the deadline. The contest for "GO BOLD and SIMPLE" will now be due on Sunday (the 19th) midnight-PST. This will give you more time to create.

And now, here is another layout that is bold and simple. Our July Guest Design Artist Michele has created this fun, bright and clean layout.

I love to give gifts during the summer time, ya know... baked goods and summer theme stuff treats.

These two gift ideas come from our DT Gal Renee. I love that she thought to add a special circle tag, to the top of her jam. Simple bold colors like these, will have the town women talking ;)

And if you have a child in sports... their team mates will love this idea. I love the Simple tag and large bold letters.

Remember, you have until Sunday Night to turn in you "GO BOLD and SIMPLE" entries. I can't wait to see your work.
Happy Friday everyone

Go Bold In Size!

What do I love most about our DT Gal Angie H?
She has a very noticeable style! I love that she uses "BOLD SIZED SHAPES" in her layering! I think it adds to her beautifully simple and clean style of scrapbooking.

You can see that she added this LARGE butterfly and 3 simple papers, layered behind it.

She took 3 busy pattern paper rectangles and layered on a tag.

Cutting her green paper, the same size as the photo... brings your eye focus into the middle. Then she layered on thick polka dot papers (on top and bottom), to bring in BOLD colors!

Whatever your style might be...sometimes it's fun to mix things up. I would love to see how you can "GO BOLD and SIMPLE"
Please link your project here and I'll post my fav on Friday :) If you use GCD product... you'll be entered into our "GO BOLD and SIMPLE" contest.

This adorable layout was created by our Lori Roop and I'm in love with it. Isn't this the cutest little cowboy in town??? I think so!

I love how she layered her title on pattern paper and that she placed a "W" on the photo. SOOO adorable!!!

And today's winner is...

IT'S PRODUCT TESTING TIME!

Please welcome the very TALENTED...

Cassie D'Ambrosio
Our Product Tester

To tell the truth... I was SOOO sad Cassie didn't make it into the final round, for the DT gals (Altered Items). Her work is so amazing and she is so TALENTED! I knew we just had to have her test products!!!

So, we sent Cassie our Lost in Paradise collection and she made so many AMAZING THINGS! We hope you love Cassie's beautiful work and have fun... getting new ideas.

Bio:
Hi. I’m Cassie D’Ambrosio. I’ve been married for 14 years and have two children, Sophia and Nicholas. I work full-time as an Architect and specialize in Commercial Interiors. I discovered scrapbooking about 3 ½ years ago which quickly lead to card making and even digital scrapbooking. I’ve been interested in all kinds of crafts for as long as I can remember including crocheting, origami, and jewelry making. I guess you could say that I’m the happiest when I’m creating. Thank you so much for the opportunity to be a Product Tester for GCD Studios. I had a great time and loved using the products I received.

Cassie's Review:

When I opened the package from GCD Studios I immediately said, out loud, “Wow, this paper is gorgeous!”. I received the Lost in Paradise paper collection. I flipped through the papers and I could feel how good the quality of the paper is. It’s nice and thick and the colors and patterns are fabulous. The paper pack has a nice mix of different scaled patterns and the reverse sides were mostly a faint, small grid which I thought was great and very versatile. I have some left over and see using that for lots of cards. I also received some of the glitter letter stickers. I couldn’t believe how much are in each pack, enough for many projects out of one pack. There are lots of letters and numbers and in different fonts so you can use all the same or mix-n-match. They were very easy to work with. The paper cut very well with everything I tried. I used my paper trimmer, Cricut, Sizzix, punches and scissors. I also inked it (book) and sanded it (magnetic frame). The only thing that I didn’t like about the paper was that it wasn’t a true 12”x12” square, it was 11 7/8” x 12” and I had planned (4) 12”x12” squares for my pre-stretched canvas board. Luckily for me, the canvas actually measured a ¼” short so it actually worked out perfectly.

Thanks Cassie for making this special assignment so great!

PS Happy Monday everyone!
